European Expedition - Heidelberg
The Hotel Wirtshaus
From Sankt Leon we tried to get onto Patrick Henry but couldn’t. The refugees are there now. Then we drove into Heidelberg. Right downtown, onto the cobblestone, right by the Old Bridge and the Gate and the infamous Monkey Statue, to our hotel located perfectly by the Old Gate and the Thai restaurant that Chris and I used to frequent. It was such a fun location.
We carried our bags upstairs and moved in to Room #5 (girls) and room #11 (boys) while Chris parked the van across the Neckar River. Such cute little rooms with views out into the square. I love that we’re staying right downtown Heidelberg.
The Old Gate
We headed out to explore our city. First under the Old Gate and then over the bridge.
Views of the Heidelberg Castle
We checked out the views of the Heidelberg Castle from the bridge and continued all the way across the Neckar River.
On the Hauptstrasse
It was a beautiful night. We grabbed pizza for the kids, which they ate while we walked. Chris and I decided we were going to put the kids to bed and then eat at the Golden Falcon — one of our favorite German restaurants so we didn’t eat pizza but I couldn’t resist grabbing an Amarena gelato to hold me over.
Wandering around the Heidelberg Castle
Lots of swinging, skipping, leap-froging and climbing around the Heidelberg Castle grounds. It was so fun walking around. The courtyard was open so we walked in and watched a play being rehearsed for awhile.

Date Night
Once the girls and boys were ‘tucked in’ their rooms, Chris and I headed to the Golden Falcon for dinner.
Spargle soup, Spargle, ham and tomato flamkucken, and roast with mushroom sauce and homemade German noodles. So good! It was a beautiful night! It was fun to walk around and reminisce about all the times we came downtown for our dates. Such a magical city!!
