Arriving in Switzerland

We had Grandma Walton drive and Granny J drive us to the Salt Lake Airport since there was too many of us to fit in one car. We’re leaving the van at Mike and Carly’s house and Chris’ car at Shelley’s house so we needed both of them to help us and it worked great.

We couldn’t help but think of moving to Germany as we gathered to take a picture before heading inside.. Our 9 hour flight to Paris went well. The boys were so excited about all the movie options and the inflight meals. It’s pretty exciting. It felt like 3:00pm - 2:00am for us - and we should have prioritized sleep at the end but instead watched a lot of movies. The boys watched 65, Guardians of the Galaxy and Dungeons and Dragons together. They sat in front of Chris and I and liked to check in between movies. I slept initally and especially liked Mr. Malcolm’s List.

We were starting to get tired just as we landed in Paris. We moved through the airport and settled in at our new gate to Geneva. Megan wrote in her journal and stared into space intermittently. Emily croqueted. Katie, Luke and Matt tried to curl up and get some sleep, Dad worked on his Lake Powell video and I moved from kid to kid giving shoulder rubs and then went on a walk through the airport happy to find fun French things like croissants, perfume and even a poodle.

As soon as we were on our second flight we settled in to rest. Luke and Matt fell asleep on the runway and didn’t wake up until we were back on the ground again - which was good. I woke up from time to time to accept sandwiches for my sleeping crew and readjust Matt’s head and our shared pillow.

After getting our bags in Geneva, Switzerland we headed downstairs to wait for the train. Kaite commented on how easy the transition to train travel was. Grateful for Chris figuring out the schedule and buying our tickets ahead of time. Chris picked up a Caesar salad and a few sandwiches from the bakery to share and we settled on to the top of the train and tried to sleep again. We trained from Geneva to Bern and then changed trains to Spielg? and then one more to Interlaken. The views were gorgeous — especially by the lake but most of us struggled to keep our eyes open.

We each took our suitcase and followed Chris down the street to our brown Swiss Chalet, a couple blocks from the train station. It’s a cute three bedroom space with lots of windows and a back deck with a grassy yard.

It’s so fun being back in Europe with the kids. We excitedly introduced Luke and Matt to the German windows, small fridge, two button flushing toilets and darling green shutters. Exhausted but happy, we decided to walk to the grocery store to buy a few things for dinner and breakfast. Megan took the lead and used my phone to navigate us to the market. We loved picking out our favorite Fanta, Pick Up chocolate cookies, Haribo treats, yogurt, bread, cheese, salami and Magnum Bars. A trip down memory lane. Then we walked back home, and ate our sandwiches and magnum bars out on the back deck while the church bells rung in the distance. It’s so fun to be here!!

We gathered in the girls room for scripture study and family prayer and were in our beds by 9:30pm. I slept until 2:30am but was awake for several hours in the middle of the night.
