European Expedition - Bacharach and Sankt Goar, Germany
We woke up again at 8:00 and got ready and all packed up. Chris and the kids headed to the bakery again to pick up some butter pretzels and cherry streusel for breakfast while I finished getting ready. Then I picked up a pen and ink of Heidelberg right at the base of the Heidelberg cathedral and then off we went with our suitcases across the Old Bridge for the last time towards our van.
We drove through the beautiful Rhine River Valley and it was so fun to count castles and pass little river-side villages.
Backarack, Germany
We first explored the charming town of Bacharach. Some of us had been here before - I think Chris and I and the boys with visitors while the kids were in school - but it was fun to be back. We checked out the town’s church and then wandered through the streets towards the hill-side trail to the tower.
We checked out the views from the tower and then continued past the vineyards and up the mountain.
Even overcast and with muddy waters the view was beautiful.
Katie was so good to help Matt up the hill. He did great, but enjoyed a little break now and then. Fun to see the Stahleck Castle in the distance.
Back down in Bacharach we grabbed lunch at a bakery - four sandwiches and a loaf of bread that everyone loved - and sat down against a stone building share and enjoy. Always a couple of Fanta Soda’s as well.
After lunch we got back in the van and headed on to Sankt Goar. We drove all the wya up to the Reinfels Castle and spent an hour wandering through it.
The kids especially enjoyed the mine tunnels, dark, dripping with water, muddy and a little claustrophobic… but so much fun. Chris caught them on camera walking out of one tunnel acting like zombies. It’s was pretty great.
