Edinburgh - The Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle

We flew from Frankfurt to Edinburgh, Scotland on Ryan Air Thursday night arriving pretty late. Fun to look out the window and capture a little bit of our flight.

Our little two bedroom apartment on Hopetoun Street worked great and we especially loved having a washing machine in our kitchen so we could get some laundry done. After breakfast at our hotel (Chris probably headed to the market to grab a few things) we headed out to explore Edinburgh.

A little ‘Adda-cadda-noova’ outside the Queen’s Gallery.

Matt is the cutest thing! He really wanted this Nessie Lock Ness Monster stuffed animal but we settled for a picture.

Canongate Kirk

Loved this Dutch-style historic church founded in 1688. We wandered around the back to check out the cemetery. Love the boys pointing reading one of the statues.

Walking up the Royal Mile

We loved the architecture and shops on the Royal Mile. We watched street performers and spray paint artists, went into a Christmas shop, heard the bagpipes and enjoyed the good weather.

Visiting my favorite little Scottish Tarten Store… Ness

Approaching the St. Giles Cathedral

The inside of this Cathedral was stunning. Wood arched ceilings, heavy stone arches and colorful flags everywhere.

Below is one of my favorite pictures since it accurately shows what our experience. Chris walking around with his Rick Steves book reading and studying every stain glassed window and the kids amusing themselves while trying to wait patiently. And me - not pictured of course - wandering around taking pictures of all of it.

Edinburgh Castle

Couldn’t leave this area without a dozen pictures or so. Love these red telephone booths!

I had to include these little pictures that tell a few details of this trip. Ryan is always carrying a backpack of snacks and helping his siblings tie their shoes — and Dad is always reading the Rick Steves book to the kids. The kids try to find a place to sit down whenever they can — because sight-seeing is tiring!

Scottish National War Memorial

Cute Katie, happy to be assistant videographer when needed!

Another History Lesson… this time there was a quiz with Gummy Bear prizes for correct answers. The kids were doing their best to listen and get the answers right. I’m quite sure we make a scene wherever we are. These Asian gentlemen were amused by our little eager classroom. Anything for gummy bears!

One of the fancy royal rooms inside the Edinburgh Castle. Just beautiful! From here we left the Castle grounds and headed back to our house. Such a good day!
