Edinburgh - Calton Hill and the Scott Monument

Heading up to Calton Hill

Views of the Dugald Stewart Monument with the city behind it.

Views of Edinburgh’s Balmoral Clock Tower, the Ediburgh Castle and the Scott Monument with the Dugald Stewart Monument in the foreground.

Ryan and Megan by the National Monument, inspired by the Parthenon in Athens. It was intended to commemorate the Scottish servicemen who died in the Napoleonic Wars, but it was never completed so just contains the twelve columns you can see here.

For sure reason this stone here kept us busy for a while, making monuments of our own. Lots of fun videos and pictures — and lots of laughing.

A perfect place for a game of tag.

The kids on the National Monument.

Sitting by the Scott Monument

a Victorian Gothic monument to honor Scottish author, Sir Walter Scott. Construction started in 1840.

We really enjoyed climbing the Scott Monument — just so much to take pictures of. Intricate stonework and statues, cute kids and beautiful views of the city in all directions. We always love a good climb.

Back on the ground, we sprawled out on the lawn, ate a few snacks and watched Katie and Megan do a few swing dance flips. We had terrific Scotland weather and we could tell the whole of Edinburgh was enjoying it too.

The Scottish National Gallery

Love this picture of Luke reading about different works of art. We enjoyed wandering around and admiring the paintings… here are a few of my favorites…

Grabbing a quick Scottish lunch at the National Scottish Gallery.

The National Museum of Scotland

We enjoyed the National Museum of Scotland… mainly the Natural World Galleries with it’s animals and skeletons. The building was beautiful.

Victoria Street

What my kids might remember most about this day was the playground at the base of the Edinburgh Castle. A perfect place to spend the rest of the afternoon.

A few Scottish Doors on our way home…
