European Expedition - Burg Eltz, Germany

After visiting Bacharach and Sankt Goar, we headed 45 minutes west to the most impressive looking castle in all of Germany… Burg Eltz. Again, the drive was gorgeous. We wandered through green grass, flowered hillsides, valleys, rivers, quaint little villages and stone castles on our way.

Then from the parking lot we walked through the forest leading to this hill-top castle in a huge valley. It’s stunning.

One of our favorite parts of this castle is the inner courtyard. I love seeing the red shutters, brick walls, and multiple turrets in every direction.

Since we’ve done the tour of the inside before we opted to just walk around and enjoy the courtyards and hang from medal bars here and there.

We decided to take the footpath back to the car — which I hadn’t even known about before — and gave us great side views of the castle. Such a beautiful trail to walk back to the van.

Journaling from my travel notebook on the airplane to Edinburgh, Scotland: “It’s been so fun to experience Germany all over again. We loved remembering all of Germany’s little endearing quirks — like the ways the windows open up and out, the sinks with no counter space, two buttons to flush the toilet, doors on kitchens and so much more. We love you Germany. We stopped at the Lidl to grab some soft knotted bread, salami, ham and gouda cheese — which everyone loves and is a perfect last German meal — and drove to the Frankfurt Hahn Airport. Chris dropped us off and took the rental van back while we took the suitcases inside and got in line. Smooth sailing checking in and getting through security. Now we’re on the flight to Edinburgh, Scotland. We’ll pick up our next rental van and go meet someone at our apartment to let us in. So excited to be here for three nights and to be staying in a house again instead of hotels. We’re having so much fun. Boy, are we blessed!”
