New York City Girls Trip–Times Square

Katie and Maggie have been dreaming of a New York Trip for years.  With Maggie’s 15th Birthday approaching, Megan asked if I’d really be interested in taking the girls to New York for a Mother Daughter Trip.  I was in.  Megan surprised Maggie with the trip on her birthday.  A couple days before that I gathered Katie and Emily and said, “Guess what?! I found out what Maggie is getting for her birthday and she is going to freak out!”  They both leaned in curious for the inside scoop.  “She’s getting a trip to New York…” I let that sink in just long enough for their jaws to drop and then I said, “…with you guys… and Ally!”  They were shocked, and Katie started to cry.  They are fun to surprise.  That was the beginning of August so they had about 7 weeks to look forward to the trip.  They started Pinterest boards and talked about clothes and accessories in detail.

Thursday morning we picked up Megan and Maggie about 7:30am and headed to the Denver airport for our flight at 11:00.  We got their about 5:00pm New York time – headed downstairs to baggage, met Liz and Ally!!! and hopped in the shuttle van that Megan had arranged to take us into the city and drop us off at our hotel in Times Square:

the Marriott Marquis.   It was a great hotel, and the location worked perfectly for our trip.  We got two adjoining rooms – one for the girls and one for the moms.  We checked in and zoomed our luggage up to the 35th floor – literally, because of the super speedy ear-popping elevators which we suppressed a scream on almost every ride up and down.

Views of Times Square from our hotel.  The first two from our room, the third from one of the hotel restaurants.

After unpacking for just a minute, we headed out into the city.  We lucked out with the best weather for this trip.  Even at 7:00 at night we didn’t need a jacket.  We wandered the streets around Times Square and Broadway, soaking it all in.

Katie grabbed my camera and took some pictures of Liz, Megan and I.  Not sure what was so funny but later when we got to the hotel and I took a look at this pictures on my camera, Liz, Megan and I were laughing so hard we were crying.  It was 1:30 am.  Our girls thought we had lost it – and they were right.  I’m keeping the pictures just to remember what fun we had.

We wandered a few blocks in search of a good restaurant and settled on Joe Allen – which had been recommended to us.  It was fantastic.  Our waiter was fun (and ‘cute’ said the girls), the food was great and the cozy brick wall tavern-style restaurant was the perfect atmosphere to settle down and enjoy our first meal.

Our waiter drew our attention to the Broadway posters on the walls and the History of the restaurant: Joe Allen opened the restaurant in 1965.  That same year, the cast of the ill-fated show “Kelly” gave Joe a poster of their show.  It ran one performance.  Since then, it’s become a Broadway tradition for those unlucky flops to adorn their brick walls.  All of the posters throughout the restaurant were shows that lasted less than 2 weeks.  When Joe Allen opened a hamburger cost 75 cents and the most expensive ticket to a Broadway show was $7.50. So fun to know the history.

Times Square is certainly something to see.  So bright, so many people, and so much going on.
