Ryan and Katie’s FIRST WEEKEND at BYU
Ryan, Katie and I drove from Colorado Springs to Provo on Wednesday. We had a great drive talking, listening to General Conference talks, switching drivers, eating licorice, talking about Patriarchal Blessings and DJing some sweet old 80’s/90’s music like New Kids on the Block, Milli Vanilli, Erasure, etc. The kids were laughing at my old High School music. We got in to Grandma and Grandpa’s house about 6:00 in time to do a tour of their house (first time for Ryan) and see their new furniture (first time for all of us). Brian came over to eat and then we played games – ending with a late night shuffleboard competition. So fun to have my parents living in Provo so we can be close to BYU for all the back and forth we’re doing!
Thursday morning Ryan, Katie and I headed to the Convocation at the Marriott Center for both the New Parents and the New Students. Marilee and I met and sat together. The meeting was awesome and made me feel so grateful that Ryan and Katie had the opportunity to attend BYU – a school with such an amazing story and legacy. We watched an interesting video and heard from the BYU Student Body President and then the President of BYU, President Kevin J. Worthen. The kids headed off to get Ryan’s Student ID and Marilee and I had lunch and went to a second speaker, Dr. Larry Nelson, who gave advice on how parents can help their students have a successful first year. They reminded us that just because we did something that worked or experienced something one way 20 years, it might not be what’s best for our student. We need to think about our student as an individual.
So fun to be experiencing all of this with friends. Annie, Spencer, Ryan and Katie.
After Ryan got his student ID we met at Katie’s dorm to unload her things and Grandma met us there.
Then over to Ryan’s apartment: Liberty on Eighth. So fun to get him moved in, see the apartment and meet some of his roommates.
Katie with her two good friends – Daylee and Brookelyn after checking out the Student Fair at the Wilk.
We headed back to my mom’s house for a quick dinner and then headed over to the LaVell Edwards Stadium for the YOU ARE THE Y event. Mom came with me which was so fun! Ryan and Katie donned their new BYU shirts and headed off for the Student Section and Mom and I headed off for the parents section.
From our view in the parents section. So fun to be here!!
They had the freshman get out their phones and light up the Y as it started to get darker. Then they light the Y in a wave going from bottom to top and back. The kids loved it and it was so fun to watch!
After the pictures and video they excused the freshman to come closer to the field but the night’s events. They had Vocal Point, the Cougarettes, the Cheer Squad, the Marching Band, Cosmo and the Football Captains performing and getting everyone excited. They even practiced the Cougar Fight song. Ryan said his voice was gone from so much screaming.
Outside Ryan’s apartment…
Spencer, Charlie and Ryan
Chris, Adam, Ryan and Spencer. Love it!
And of course we need a couple staring pictures. So funny to watch these men try not to smile.
After a couple pictures outside Ryan and Spencer’s apartment, we headed over to the Brittany to relive history. So funny watching Chris and Adam reinact praying to figure out where to live and feeling good about the Brittany. Love these guys.
Walking down memory lane… The guys in front of #6. Right after this picture Adam knocked on the door and we all ran… so funny.
Pictures outside of the Wilk just before saying goodbye to the Christoffersons.
Dinner over at Scott and Elisha’s house. Always so fun to be together.
Ryan’s bedroom…
After church we made another trip to Ryan’s apartment to visit and grab a couple pictures of Ryan and Michael Cole and all of his roommates: Carson, Charlie, Michael, Ryan, Hayden and Spencer. It’s going to be a great year.
