Trip to Pick up Ryan - Berat and Osumi Canyon, Albania

Our cute little apartment on the grounds of the Berat Castle had a perfect courtyard. The owner asked us what time we wanted breakfast and had it ready for us on the table outside our front door. We ate tradition byrek (cheese or spinach filled pastries), kos (yogurt) and fruit to go. So fun experiencing the Albanian culture, sights and food with Ryan.

We left the castle grounds and headed out into the country side seeing lots of animals on our way.

Ryan was anxious to take us into the Osumi Canyon - somewhere he had been several times on P-Days during his time here in Berat. I remember seeing pictures of a ward activity out to the canyons. He was excited to get in the water, now that he was allowed to swim.

At one of the lookouts to this beautiful canyon, Ryan hoped down into the Bride’s Hole… which was deeper than I thought! He and Elder Harris had fun climbing in and out of here on their mission.

This canyon was beautiful. Such a great place to explore.

This is the Boulevard downtown Berat. THE place to be every evening to walk up and down and connect with family and friends. During the day in 98 degree weather - NOT the place to be, which is why we have it pretty much to ourselves. Smart Albanians are inside having their main meal of the day and then taking a nap.

Ryan took us to his favorite restaurant here for lunch. I really can’t believe I don’t have a picture of the food because it was one of our favorites of the whole trip… burrito suflaqe filled with meat, fries and sauce.

You can see the castle wall and courtyards on the hill behind us. That’s where our hotel is.

After being in the heat in the early afternoon we decided to head back to our apartment to rest for awhile.

Later in the evening we walked from our apartment down into the city as the sun was setting.

View from the top of the Berat Castle.

Love this section of town at the base of the hill. Such cool homes stacked on top of each other.

Loved taking pictures of this area as the sun was going down. Beautifully lit homes along the hillside. What a place!

We had fun walking the Boulevard at night. SO many people walking back and forth, talking to friends, hanging out in parks along the side. Even at 9:00 and 10:00 there are families with little kids walking up and down. Every night. I love it!

One more Berat breakfast in our courtyard before checking out and heading for other fun locations. We really loved it here!
