Update from Elder Johnson—August 2017

Monday, August 7th

Saturday was the highlight of the week. Tedi Fejzi, the coolest nine-year-old in Albania, was baptized. He was baptized by Elder Riepel, which is funny because Elder Riepel never taught him. He just gave him the baptismal interview because he is our district leader. But Tedi wanted Elder Riepel to baptize him. It was a great service. His parents and younger sister (age 5) came and loved it. Hopefully they will follow in Tedi's footsteps. Avash, avash. Anyway He was so ready. He is awesome.  Here are some pictures from the baptism, but Tedi is not looking at the camera or smiling. But that is ok, He is awesome.

Anyway, other than that. We had an exchange with T2 this week. Elder Wood came with me in my area and we had some great lessons with less actives and some time to contact. It was a great time. Fun stuff.

We did service, We are working with some great people who are less active. They should come to church. It would bless their lives immensely. But, they are still great people.

I love my life. I hope you are loving yours. Life is simply incredible.

This week will be busy. Tomorrow we have district meeting and then I will go on an exchange in T1, my old area, with Elder Ward (who was trained by Elder Ingram right after I left). And then on Thursday we have MLC, so we can talk about the work with the president. This is my first one so I don't know exactly what it will be like, or how long, or anything but I am looking forward to it. Then that night I will go on an exchange in Shkodër, my other old area, with Elder Harris (who I served with in Berat). That will be fun to catch up with Elder Harris and the Shkodër and Lezhë members. It will be a great week with some great work.

Have a great week. I love you.

Mom, everything sounds great. That is so fun that Katie and Emily and you are going to New York City. That will be fun. Katie is fun to surprise. You do lots of fun stuff. But I am not that jealous. I get to do lots of fun stuff too. And I get to fall in love with Albania.

It would be so great to talk in person. We talked to one lady. She asked us if we talk to our family often. We said once a week on email. She was shocked and was emphatic that we needed to start calling you every day. It was funny.

I love you all so much. I also heard that the boys got some sweet games on the wii. fun stuff. I would be lying if I said I wasn't excited about it. Good luck preparing for the school year. Katie is going to be a senior!!

Dad,  Wow, 158 is awesome for bowling. How? and Grandma too?? My goal is to hit 150. My best ever is about 140. We went bowling again today and I got around 120. When we started playing, I got two strikes in a row and then (of course) I ruined it by hitting the gutter right afterwards. But, it was super fun. I love the sports like bowling, ping-pong, and billiards!  Albanians also love billiards. As far as gaming and sports goes they only play soccer and billiards for sports, and for board games only dominoes and mulan (a fun card game i will teach you when I get home), and that is it really it.

That Colorado Rapids game sounds fun.

The Mexico trip sounds fun. That will be sweet. I was actually wondering if you could make an excel sheet or calendar or something for some possible plans of what could happen next summer. I would love to see some different options. I will be thinking of pro's and con's of you coming to pick me up from Albania. anyway, that is just a random thing I was thinking of. I know I don't need to worry about it.

Megan’s Letter to Ryan and response…

Two Sundays ago we drove to Utah. We listening to Hank Smith, watch newsies and ate food. Then we got to the Starbuck's house for Brianna's farewell. It was fun, there was a lot of food and we got a tour of the house then we drove to the Cook's house and went to bed. On Monday we dropped off the girls at EFY and then went out for lunch or Even Stevens after that we went to seven peaks it was awesome. We saw the Walton's at seven peaks with their other family. We were not a lot of rides like boomerang shotgun and freefall. Then we came home and went to bed. On Tuesday I woke up ate breakfast and went to the park it was fun, we did a relay race. Next we ate at Café Rio which was delicious. Mom and I shared a salad. Then we went to the Lehi fun center had a lot of cool rides like bumper boats your baby drops and swings. Then we got ice cream at Rockwell we walked around and played Bunny bunny then we went home ate noodles and chicken. Then we watched Boss Baby then we went to bed. It was a fun day. On Wednesday we said goodbye to the cooks packed up and drove to the Walton's house he met baby Ben, he's so adorable. Then we made a dance and played chopped.  then we made sugar cookies and sold them at the M&M shop. The M&M shop stands for Megan and Molly. We sold a lot of yummy foods. Then we taught Molly how to play Splendor. We went to bed. On Thursday we went to the splash pad and then went to seven peaks, a lot of free fall and boomerang and Jagged Edge it was fun. Then Brian came and then we watched Mater toons and Kubo and we went to bed. On Friday we did stuff I forgot what we did though. On Saturday we picked up the girls from EFY and we went to seven peaks that day also with the Waltons it was very fun oh and also the moons came! Then we went to grandmas house for the next couple of days and it was great and we ate lots of chunky food, went out to eat a lot, we saw the cousins, we celebrated Haley and Peytons birthday and it was fun. And we met grandma's puppy Ruby, she is really cute and likes to lick your face. And Mom and Dad really don't like her. I got really sick and I just laid in bed the whole day while the rest of the Fam went bowling they're so lucky. We eventually drove home on Thursday early early in the morning. So when we arrived in Colorado springs on Thursday we went straight to my soccer game but I was too sick to play. We lost 3 to 0. But I love my new team. We had another game on Friday and won that game 2 to 0. Then we had two games on Saturday and we tied the first one and one the second one 1 to 0. We ended up being third place in the whole tournament. dad bought me this really cool soccer thing I'm sure you've heard of it it's like you hold onto the handle and then you kick the ball and then like there's a string and the ball just comes back it's like to help you with your touches and stuff it's really cool. Schools about to start and I'm really not happy about that one. I'll be in seventh grade that will be the worst grade of all the grades it's just the middle OK sorry this is so long I probably just wasted your time. Enough about me let's talk you.what's going on in life. Who is your companion again? How many investigators do you have currently? I love you so much. I miss you a lot. Just one more year.   Okay bye  -Megan

Megan -- Wow, sounds like a busy but super fun two weeks. That is too bad that you got sick at the end.   I love love love getting emails from you and getting all the details. It is my favorite thing. My companion is Elder Nielsen. We only have about 3 progressing investigators right now.  I love you more. Keep having lots of fun. Work hard and get good grades in school this year. I love you so much. Love, your favorite older brother Elder Johnson

Ryan’s Letter to Matthew – August 7, 2017

Thanks for the questions.  My mission is amazing. You will love yours.

I am always having fun because I get to meet amazing people and talk about the one thing that brings me the most joy and peace all day every day.

Two weeks ago, I bore my testimony because I was new in the Tirana 3rd ward.

It is still super hot and super humid. I am always sweaty all over

Matthew’s 8 things that are going on with me – and Ryan’s responses:

1.  In Utah we went to Seven Peaks three times and Boomerang and Freefall are the best ones. I remember Seven Peaks. Sounds like lots of fun.

2.  It was so fun playing on our 3DS's and 2DS's with Derek.  That sounds fun.

3.  I liked celebrating Haylee and Payton's birthday last Sunday night. We played freeze tag on the tramp and ate good food.  My favorite part of the food was watermelon and spicy Doritos.  I love watermelon!

4.  I liked bowling with the Johnsons.  One time I got 2nd last. And one time I got 1st.  Way to go. I went bowling today. One time I got 2nd, and one time I got 3rd.

5.  The Cooks had a really big yard and it was so fun. They have cats named Tiggie and Nola.  Cool.

6.  I'm excited to go into 3rd grade but not the learning.   Trust me. Learning is super fun. I do it all day every day. I learn new words in Albanian, I learn how to be kinder and to have the spirit with me always. It is great to learn. I love personal study, where I get to learn from the scriptures and Preach My Gospel, and I love Language Study, where I get to learn Albanian (Recently, I have been reading the Bible in Albanian. It is great and I am understanding it really well (We will see how well I understand when I get to numbers and stuff like that.)

7.  Grandma Johnson got me a new Wii U game called Zelda - Breath of the Wild.  The game is so fun.  That game sounds awesome. You have to tell me all about it. What do you do in it? You should send me a picture of you playing it.

8.  We had fun doing DARES with Derek in the dark in Grandma's basement.  They stayed until midnight on the last night before we left.  And Derek told scary stories.   That is funny.

I love you.  You are the best.  Love Matt    I love you more. No, YOU are the best.  Love, Your best friend, Elder Johnson

Hi everyone...

This week was awesome. We had a sweet week. Tuesday to Wednesday I had an exchange with Elder Ward in T1. We got to meet with Përparim, and their two other recent converts. It was great. He is a hard worker. I loved talking to him about T1. I have great memories there.

Thursday was Mission Leader Conference. MLC was amazing. Things get done there. It is so cool to see the big picture. We discussed so many different things, and amazing plans were made, which should do great things for the mission and people here. We are making English Course a better resource (better-organized, more helpful to people, better to help us find(which is it's purpose)) which will be awesome. There is a cool BoM 1 PAGE project that has been going on where people show 1 page of the Book of Mormon (on a clipboard) to someone on the street and ask them to read it and highlight anything they read about God. Apparently, it has been really cool, so we talked about doing that in our mission. The AP's are going to make some posters and it will be sweet. We talked about lots of amazing stuff. At Zone Conference on Thursday, the rest of the mission will learn about these things. We will also give a training, my first training as a zone leader. I am excited. We will talk mostly about D&C 18 - The Worth of Souls is Great in the Sight of God. We will talk about Loving all men and invite our zone to care about their investigators, recent converts, and less actives. keep track of them and teach according to their needs, invite them to be baptized, work with ward and stake leaders. I hope it will go well.

Thursday and Friday I was on an exchange with Elder Harris in Shkodër. It is fun to talk to him, especially because we have served in the exact same areas: T3, T1, Berat, and Shkodër. He is a stud and had a baptism on Saturday. I got to do the baptismal interview for him while I was there.

So, I didn't get to spend a lot of time in my area this week, but it was a great week. We are praying for Tedi's parents to be baptized.

Today, we played soccer with all of Tirana for a few hours, ate some good food at a great restaurant, played two games of pool, and emailed. This coming Thursday, we will have Zone Conference. That will be fun.

I love the Lord. I am so endlessly grateful that I can be a part of his work. Don't forget the amazing and endless love and patience that the Lord has for you. Let him help you. Don't do it yourself. Rely on the Savior. Things will work out better that way.

I love my life.  I love you all. Have a great week.   Love, Elder Johnson

Thanks dad. I love hearing about your mission experiences. It makes me feel a lot closer to you. I do miss Father's blessings.

Thanks for letting me know about the options for next summer. Sounds great. I love you so much.

Mom, I love reading your emails. It is a delight. Sounds like a super busy week. Thanks for everything you do for my siblings. and for everything you do for me. Thank you for emailing me. I really do appreciate it. You are the best mom ever, and you will always be my mom. That is a huge blessing for me.

Mark is leaving on Wednesday. I am so happy. It will be so great to email him as we are both missionaries. He will finally know what it is like to be a missionary.

Katie's talk sounds awesome. I would love to see a copy, if she has it written down.

Wow, that is crazy that the Gillespies are gone. Tate is going to be an awesome missionary. I think about him quite a bit, because Elder Nielsen literally acts exactly like him (always). It is crazy, but great.

I love my life.    Have a great day with Megan and have a great school year. I hope all goes well.

Hi everyone,

It was a great week. We are busy, especially on P-days. We always have so much to do. We met with a cool new couple, Mikel and Albona, tracting. They are awesome. We taught them about the restoration and they are excited to learn more and find out the truth for themselves. I will keep you updated on them. We got the number of another cool couple, Simon and Violeta, who we called and they came to church. They enjoyed it and asked if they could bring their son next time.

We have been teaching Gentian and Frida but still no large progress towards baptism. They are so awesome. They just don't feel the desire to be baptized yet, though in their prayers, they ask for a desire to be baptized.

Zone Conference was on Thursday. It went really well. Our training went well, as did all the trainings from the Sister Training Leaders, APs, and Mission President. The STL's invited the zone to participate in a month of invitations, where we contact every single member, working through the active members and others and ward activities. It should be great.

Today was great. Started the day with early morning soccer and Frisbee, (I love these missionaries here!) then we entered our zone numbers (like we do every Monday morning) and then I bought the Hobbit in Albanian. I will read it after my mission. We went to a cool fry place that only sells fries, but has about 20 different sauces you can choose from. Then we went to the curly ice cream place. Now I am emailing and listening to some nice Christmas music (too early?) I am already super excited. I am just loving life.

I love you all. I have been reading the Old Testament. I am in the middle of Exodus. I loved reading about the early patriarchs, Adam, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, and then Moses. Now the Israelites are at Mount Sinai, and they just received the Ten Commandments. There is so much to learn from the Bible. I love it. I especially like reading the story of Moses. I remember the movie Prince of Egypt and was thinking of that. It is incredible to see God's incredible power manifest so many times, and still, the Israelites complain and murmur against their living prophet and their living God. 10 plagues were afflicted upon Egypt, The Red Sea was parted, Israel was freed from cruel slavery and obviously God was at the head of it, and then, the Israelites murmur to Moses for lack of bread and water, saying that it would have been better to be in servitude to the Egyptians still. Very similar to the complaining of Laman and Lemuel against their father Lehi and brother Nephi, after they too saw so many amazing miracles that allowed their escape and survival in the wilderness. God was happy to provide for the needs of his suffering people, but He was not happy with their murmuring attitude. We need to be more. We, who have chosen to join the Lord's church, need to stay true at all times. God loves us, and will help us, but murmuring and complaining will do nothing to help anything. We are the Latter Day Saints. Let us be strong through trials, for this is how we are sanctified. God gives us commandments and trials to lovingly guide us safely home. I love that eternal truth.

I love living this adventure in Albania. It is such a blessing.  I love you all, and have a great week.   Elder Johnson

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mom, I love you more.

Sounds like a great week, even though it was busy.  Your life sounds crazy. You are an amazing mom. So, now, only Emily, Luke, and Matthew are doing piano? Sounds cool. I loved piano, and always was motivated to do it. It sounds like Emily is too. but also, Bravo to Megan who practices soccer everyday. I never had the motivation to do that (though I love playing soccer) Dad showed me good drills and practices to do, but I never did them. It is cool to see the kids branch out into the things that they enjoy. I hope the boys like piano. I want to hear a piano recital from those three when I get home.

I am so glad that you and Dad do so much videoing and blogging in such an organized and memorable fashion. It seriously is a blessing for me and for generations to come. I just love all of our adventures and stories. I love living this adventure in Albania. It is such a blessing.

Dad mentioned that I could report sad or discouraging feelings or experiences, but I honestly never feel sad or discouraged. Well, obviously it is not that simple, but it sort of is. I just remember why I am here, and there are no bad times. Anything bad is swallowed up in the joy of the gospel. I only ever feel bad when I consider my own imperfections, but I try to hand that over to the Lord and forget about it. I don't know if that makes sense, but I will report how I truly feel, but usually that is only ever good things, especially after taking the sacrament on Sunday and cooling down from the week on Monday morning. I believe that after taking the sacrament on Sunday, nothing could be better. I love my life. I feel no need ever to feel discouraged. Don't share this with everyone else, because I don't want to sound like I don't have trials or imperfections, but I can't complain.

Monday August 28, 2017

Hello, everyone. I hope you all had an amazing week. We had a great week,  with lots of miracles.

Last Monday, We went tracting and we found an amazing guy named Niklejdi. He is awesome. He lived in Greece for about 20 years, so he knows Greek better than Albanian. He even studied religion there and is orthodox. We decided he should be taught in Greek, so we contacted missionaries in Greece and we skyped them from Niklejdi's computer. They are both from England, Elder Viner and Elder Gore. They are the APs in Greece. So, we set up times with them and then go over to Niklejdi's and skype and they teach in Greek. So, we are trying to pick up a few words. It was pretty easy to pick up a few just from their speech. I learned 'yes' and 'this' and 'Faith'. Also, they say Amin, instead of Amen. It has been fun, and Niklejdi is awesome. He has been very kind and likes the lessons and even came to all three hours of church on Sunday, despite working all night Saturday. When have talked about baptism, but he says "sigal, sigal", which is Greek for "avash, avash", which is actually Turkish, but is used in Albanian too, and basically means "slowly, slowly." We have had three skype lessons since our initial meeting with Niklejdi, one of which was last night. We are excited to keep working with him.

Tuesday, District meeting (our last one before transfers, but luckily only one of us got transferred. We have a great district.) Then, we skyped an awesome guy named Lorenc. (c makes a 'ts' sound) He lives in Permet (super south Albania) but will come back to Tirana in September or October. We have met him twice when he has been in Tirana for conferences and stuff. He is an assistant to a professor and knows a lot about psychology. He is awesome. We set him on a baptismal date for the 23rd of October. He should be able to get back and come to church a few times before that date. We will see if it gets pushed back or pulled forward, but he seems ready. We taught him again the next day with a member, Trashgim. Plan of Salvation. It went great.

On Wednesday, we had choir practice, as well as yesterday. We will be singing in Stake conference in two weeks. That will be fun.

Thursday, we set up a lesson with Mikel and Albona, who I mentioned last week. However, they answered the door and the wife was holding the Books of Mormon and pamphlets in her hand. They invited us in and informed us they don't want to learn anymore. They were very nice about it, but they had lots of potential. That was too bad. But, that night made up for it. We went and visited Gentian and Frida. They are so amazing, and I love them. Tedi, age 9, knows the scriptures and lessons so well. He even started reading the Bible. He is awesome. They are practically a member family already. Anajsa, age 5, is learning to pray. They remind me of my family. We have some good laughs with them, especially at Tedi and Anajsa's funny and off-topic comments. (Tedi interrupts and asks different questions about the prophet and scriptures and the Garden of Eden and other stuff, good gospel questions, just not related to the lesson. He knows so much, and he wants to serve a mission in Brasil. It is so funny. He loves the scriptures. I gave him a scripture marker and a picture of Jesus studying the scriptures and he loved it. Anajsa is so funny, and makes funny comments about everything.) I always leave their house just super happy. But, this time was special. Gentian asked me to say the prayer. I prayed that they would be blessed with a desire to be baptized so they could have that happiness and be an eternal family. After the prayer, Frida said, "So, if I had already set a date for baptism, how long before that date would I have to tell you." I just started smiling, and she eventually let on that she was going to be baptized with her husband on September 16th. Frida is super sneaky. Apparently, she has had this planned for months, and when we have talked about baptism, she has just said she wasn't ready or didn't feel it. What is cool about September 16th is that it is Gentian and Frida's 10th anniversary. Gentian had no idea about any of this either, so it was a surprise for all of us. That was a great night. After the lesson, they invited us to stay for dinner. I love that family. We are going to be working hard with them to get them ready for their date. They already live the commandments and come to church as a family every week, so it won't be hard. They are the best.

Friday, we met with Alfred Abdulari, a less active. He is awesome, but he just won't come to church. It is really too bad. He tells us that he will come, but doesn't. There are a lot of reasons, which I won't get into here, but he is so cool. We will keep working with him.

Saturday, we had a lesson with Mustafa, who was previously an investigator and is super poor. He has been working in Montenegro. We will probably work with him a little in the future.

Sunday was good. I love church. I played the piano in church. It was good. We also taught second and third hour. I don't know how that happened. This coming month, we are doing a month of invitations, where all the members invite someone to an activity or church every week. We will be having lots of sweet activities.

Today, we played soccer with the rest of the missionaries in Tirana. It is always so fun. Tirana is the place to be. We did numbers, got a haircut, showered, ate at KFC, played two games of pool, and then came here to email. I love P-day.

Well, I found something really cool as I have been reading Exodus and Deuteronomy. It is talking about how the build the tabernacle and perform ordinances. Every few verses, after describing something that the Israelites did, it said, "ashtu siç e urdhëroi ZOTI Moisiun" "as the LORD commanded Moses." I love that phrase. We need to do the Lord's work, but we need to do it 'as the Lord commands' We have to do it in His way, not in our way. I love the example of the Israelites here as they willingly build the tabernacle, and they do it 'as the Lord commands' They were exactly obedient. God's commandments for the tabernacle were very specific, as to the size and colors and placement of each object, and they did exactly what the Lord commanded. Similarly, we have many specific commandments and guidelines provided by God and His living prophets. As we live 'as the Lord commands,' we will be blessed. Please read the Book of Mormon every day, "as the LORD commanded President Monson" and live according to God's lovingly provided guidelines, so that you can be closer to Him.           Love, Elder Johnson

Thanks, Dad. I love reading your emails.    Golfing sounds fun. I hope to get better at it after I get home.   The temple also sounds fun. I am glad you had a great experience there.   It sounds like every one is doing great.

Thanks, mom.  I sure love you a lot. That is awesome to hear about Katie. She seems to be doing a lot of amazing stuff with her time. I never did any senior activities, but I am glad she is enjoying them. sounds like Emily is doing great too. So happy to hear that. I love love LOVE getting your updates about my siblings, because I love them so much. Megan is so awesome. I am so excited to see them all again.  Luke is such a stud. That is exactly what I did. I would just read books and do homework on the bus.

My absolute favorite thing to hear from you is when you say that you or Matthew or you all as a family are reading the Book of Mormon. I (now) understand how important it is and the peace and joy that it brings. I am honestly filled with joy when I hear that you are reading. I am so glad that Matthew is reading every day. The earlier you start, the better. It is a little easier for me, as I have an hour set apart each day, but if you set apart the time each day, have a time set apart to wake up and then read, it will be so much easier. I don't know if you have Preach My Gospel, but everything you could ever need is in there. I would suggest looking at it. Chapter 2 has a whole bunch of amazing study tips. Chapter 3 has all the lessons that every investigator (and every member) should know. Chapter 6 is my favorite - Christlike Attributes.

That is funny to think that you wrote this email 4 hours ago.

This morning we have just had a half hour of personal study, and then some soccer. I love playing soccer with our zone. Elder Miller is extremely good (he played semi-pro before his mission) and everyone is super fun. I love playing soccer and just running after the ball (it is fun to be one of the people who knows what they are doing, but still have some solid competition. We play every week and I love it.)

So we have got some big changes happening to our zone tomorrow. Elder Benson is training in Durrës. Elder Harris is training in Shkodër. Elder Wood, Elder Taylor, and Sister Hall are all training in T2/T4. So that will be 5 trainees in our zone. That will be so fun. It will be good to get some greenie fire into the work. (Elder Gardiner is also training down in Vlorë - outside our zone) I think the work will take off. I am especially excited that Elder Benson and Elder Harris are training, because I know that they are studs and they will be great trainers. As for us (T1/T3) I am still with Elder Nielsen (which we are excited about) and we have the same district except Elder Ward is leaving to Prishtina and Elder Clayton is coming to replace him. It will be a fun time. The work is going pretty great for us, and we had some amazing experiences this past week, which I will touch more on later.

Thanks for the email. I love hearing from you. Good to hear about Mike and Carly. Elder Jaunay is from New Zealand and he is a stud. I want to visit New Zealand someday, (and see Mount Doom and the Shire) That is fun for Amy and Chris, living in California (Elder Harris is from there) That is too bad about Grandpa Walton. So tough. I will be praying for him.

Mom, yeah, I love all the missionaries here. I hope I will be able to see them all after the mission. They are the best. Most of them will go to school in Utah, with a few going to Idaho and Hawaii. But, then there are a few from England and New Zealand who I probably won't get to see too often. But, we will see. I love our mission, and I am super excited about this transfer. This is the first big group of missionaries since we came in, and now it is our group training them. We are the ones they will be looking up to. I remember how I felt about missionaries and even my Zone Leaders when I was a greenie and they were about at the same point as I am now. Now, those that I looked up to are either already home, or going home within the next 6 weeks. It will be way different. The mission is a crazy and awesome experience. Elder Samuel goes home to England on Thursday, which is crazy.
